Cape Town Police Arrest Car Thieves at Mall, Seize Firearms in Separate Operations

Cape Town police have arrested several car thieves and recovered firearms in two separate operations.

Earlier today, Thursday, 27 March, four suspects were apprehended in the parking lot of a busy shopping mall. Police spokesperson Anelisiwe Manyana stated that the Maitland Flying Squad, working alongside provincial traffic officers, cornered the four criminals and recovered two stolen vehicles at Tyger Valley shopping mall.

Upon searching the vehicles, authorities discovered jamming devices and tools used for breaking into cars.
“The two vehicles were blocked before they could flee,” Manyana said. Three suspects, aged between 37 and 51, were arrested and detained at Bellville SAPS on charges of possession of stolen vehicles, possession of jamming devices, and possession of car-breaking tools.

In another operation on Wednesday, 26 March, the Cape Town K9 Unit arrested three individuals on Wetton Road for possession of a stolen vehicle and illegal firearms.

Police spokesperson Sergeant Wesley Twigg explained that the K9 Unit followed up on a tip-off regarding a hijacked black Citroen reportedly seen in the Claremont area. Officers located and stopped the vehicle, conducting a search that led to the recovery of a 9mm pistol, a revolver, and ammunition.

The suspects, aged between 20 and 40, now face charges of possession of a hijacked vehicle and possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition. Once charged, they are expected to appear in the Athlone and Wynberg Magistrates’ Courts.Attach
